The World Health Organization presents its compliments and has the honour to forward
herewith, in accordance with Articles 3(a) and 7 of the “Procedure for the Selection of
Recommended International Nonproprietary Names for Pharmaceutical Substances” adopted by
the Executive Board in its resolution EB15.R7, 1 a list of names which has been published as
International Nonproprietary Names recommended by the World Health Organization
(abbreviation Rec. INN) 2 on the WHO website at https://www.who.int/teams/health-product-
and-policy-standards/inn/inn-lists.
Furthermore, during the 79th Consultation on International Nonproprietary Names (INN),
the INN Expert Group advised the WHO INN Secretariat to draw attention to the designation of
the INN for the substance commonly known as cytisine.
Accordingly, the INN for cytisine has been established as cytisinicline, as published in
Proposed INN List 120 and subsequently incorporated in Recommended INN List 823 on the
WHO website at https://www.who.int/teams/health-product-and-policy-standards/inn/inn-lists. It
is requested to take note of this INN in all relevant regulatory, clinical, and pharmacological
documentation to ensure consistency in the nomenclature of medicinal substances.
In accordance with Article 8 of the above-mentioned Procedure, the World Health
Organization requests that the above-mentioned list of names be recognized as the
nonproprietary names for the substances in question, and that the necessary steps be taken to
prevent the acquisition of proprietary rights in the names, including prohibition of registration of
the names as trademarks or tradenames.
