Country consultation for SDG reporting on environmental health risks

The World Health Organization (WHO) presents its compliments to Member States and
has the honour to refer to resolution WHA68.8 (2015) 1 and the updated road map for an
enhanced global response to the adverse health effects of air pollution, 2 presented by WHO at the
Seventy-eighth World Health Assembly, and to the agreement of the 2030 Sustainable
Development Agenda by UN Member States. 3 The Inter-Agency and Expert Group (IAEG) on
Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Indicators designated WHO as the custodian agency,
responsible for compilation and reporting on the official global indicators for the Sustainable
Development Goals related to mortality from environmental risk factors and the air pollution
related SDG indicators. According to the instructions from the IAEG-SDGs, international
agencies responsible for producing country estimates on SDG indicators are expected to consult
with countries on the interpretation and use of country data in global estimates and reports.
WHO is the custodial agency for the following Sustainable Development Indicators: 4
• SDG 3.9.2: Mortality from water, sanitation and hygiene
• SDG 3.9.1: Mortality from the joint effect of household and ambient air pollution
• SDG 7.1.2: Access to clean household energy
• SDG 11.6.2: Air quality in cities
The country consultation is a process whereby WHO seeks feedback from national
authorities on the country estimates of assessment of mortality related to environmental risk
factors, as well as progress in air quality. It is therefore important that relevant country
authorities are informed about the essential elements of the methodology used to derive the
estimates in order to effectively provide feedback through this consultation.

The country consultation will be conducted via the WHO country consultation portal with
designated focal point(s), either in the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Environment, or in the
National Statistical Office. Please note that WHO has access to the latest list of the latter focal
points as provided by the United Nations Statistics Department within the SDG framework, as
well as designated focal point(s) that are currently being received in response to C.L.15.2025
(with a deadline by 30 July 2025).
Designation of additional focal point(s), together with contact details (full name, title,
affiliation and email address), should be sent as soon as possible to Dr Sophie Gumy
(
[email protected]) on SDG 3.9.1, 7.1.2 and 11.6.2, and to Dr Sophie Boisson
(
[email protected]) on SDG 3.9.2. Focal point(s) will then get instructions on how to access the
country consultation platform. The role of the focal point will be to review and provide feedback
to the finalization of the data repository for the above-mentioned indicators.
The country consultation on SDG 3.9.1, 7.1.2 and 11.6.2 will be open from
24 September to 5 November 2025. Any feedback or provision of new data must be provided
by the indicated end date to ensure their consideration for inclusion in the final estimates. The
country consultation for SDG 3.9.2: Mortality from water, sanitation and hygiene will be
initiated later in the year.
In the meantime and for the duration of the country consultations, any questions on
indicators related to air pollution shall be addressed to Dr Sophie Gumy

[email protected]) for data related to air pollution and Dr Sophie Boisson

[email protected]) for queries related to water, sanitation and hygiene.
