The World Health Organization (WHO) presents its compliments to Member States and
has the honour to inform them of the planned publication of cancer estimates. These will include
country comparable childhood cancer survival estimates for children (0–14 years) and
adolescents (15–19 years). Additionally, regional survival estimates for breast and cervical
cancer will be produced. These estimates will cover observed and projected cancer diagnoses
between 2000 and 2021 for cervical, breast and childhood cancer.
In response to Member States request in World Health Assembly resolution
WHA70.12 (2017), the cancer estimates will report back on progress toward targets established
through three WHO cancer initiatives, namely the Global Initiative for Childhood Cancer,
Cervical Cancer Elimination Initiative and the Global Breast Cancer Initiative. The cancer
estimates also serve to inform WHO’s Global Status Report on Cancer 2025 and annexes
scheduled for release in September 2025 and February 2026.
Following WHO’s quality standards for data publication and prior to the official release of
the above estimates, WHO is consulting with Members States to review the methodology and
preliminary estimates. For this purpose, an online consultation will be conducted via WHO’s
Country Portal in the World Health Data Hub. Member States are requested to designate a focal
point for the consultation process and send their contact details (full name, title, affiliation and
email address) to the following email address
[email protected] as soon as possible, and no later
than 27 June 2025. The consultation for childhood cancer estimates is scheduled from
1 July 2025 until 18 July 2025.
Reference is made to C.L.11.2024 concerning the nomination of technical focal points for
the consultation on cervical cancer screening coverage. In an effort to streamline country
consultation processes across relevant areas, the focal point list for the cervical cancer screening
coverage will be used to initiate the consultation on (childhood) cancer estimates. In addition, the
focal point list of the Global Initiative for Cancer Registries provided by WHO International
Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) will be used for this consultation. The consolidated
focal point lists can be communicated upon request by sending an email to
[email protected].
Newly designated focal point(s) will receive instructions on how to access the Country Portal.
The World Health Organization takes this opportunity to renew to Member States the
