Dear Ms Hartman,
On behalf of the European Union Youth Orchestra, warm greetings to you and everybody at the Ministry of
Culture. Despite all of the many challenges at the moment, we have had an excellent year full of splendid
events since I last reported. As we continue to look forward, I wanted to say how immensely grateful we are
for your support for the work of the Orchestra, including our very highly valued Estonian members. In order to
update and report to you in detail, we have the pleasure of attaching our 2022 Activity Report. Below please
also find a short summary of the report.
2022 Headlines
Peace in Europe - as cultural ambassador for the EU, the Orchestra plays a key role in promoting peace in Europe.
Our young musicians from all 27 EU Member States working together embody the EU principle of Unity in
Diversity and offer tangible evidence that the best hope for harmony in Europe is through promoting youth,
culture and cooperation. As part of this role, the Orchestra launched the Peace in Europe project in 2022 with
concerts throughout dedicated to the cause of peace in Europe and to highlight the plight of victims of violence.
Spring 2022 Residencies & Tour - the EUYO mounted, unusually, two spring residencies, juxtaposing the
traditional Ferrara residency in the Teatro Claudio Abbado with the EUYO’s first orchestral residency in Finland
– Young Europe comes to Finland - where the Orchestra engaged diverse audiences in a great range of formal
and informal concerts, including side by side projects with local young musicians from Helsinki and Tampere.
The project is intended as a pilot for future EU and also ex-EU residencies.
Summer 2022 Residencies & Tour - young musicians from all 27 EU Member States worked and lived together
for an intense period of 40 days, during which they were coached by expert instrumental professors, and
performed with renowned conductors and soloists in great concert halls as well as in free events in informal
settings. Summer 2022 performances included the world première of Nexus by Hannah Kendall, commissioned
by the European Broadcasting Union.
New Projects - the Orchestra launched a new online learning programme, EUYO Frontrunners, and also Café
Bauhaus, an initiative that supports innovative projects that address pressing issues of our times. The EUYO also
became the first orchestra ever to perform on the sacred Greek island of Delos in a World Human Forum concert
that won the Golden Prague International Festival Crystal Award for best-televised concert of 2022, live-
streamed and broadcast across Europe, raising awareness about the urgent need to regenerate the planet.
A new Home - thanks to generous support from the Federal and Lower Austrian governments and from our
existing partner Grafenegg Kulturbetriebsges.m.b.H, the EUYO established a new legal seat in Grafenegg in
December with a new European Union Youth Orchestra Association starting in January 2023. Projects including
particularly a new Music Hub Austria programme will develop a shared young European musicians’ model.
2023 Plans and Activity
We are currently on our Spring tour, with a 2-week rehearsal residency in Luslawice, Poland, preparing a world
premiere of a new version of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons by Carmen Fizzarotti, which will be performed in Poland,
Romania, Serbia, Kosovo, North Macedonia and Greece. The tour includes a highly innovative programme
focusing on democracy and climate change, and will include collaborations with more than 100 local young
musicians, underlining the Orchestra’s important commitment to reach as many EU audiences as possible.
The Summer tour will start in residence in our summer home, Grafenegg and will continue with another
residency in Bolzano and 8 major concerts in Grafenegg, Amsterdam, Rheingau, Bolzano, Berlin and Hamburg
conducted by Antonio Pappano and Manfred Honeck with world class soloists. Later in the autumn the EUYO
will organise a Model Sharing Symposium to support the exchange and development of successful models for
youth orchestras and youth ensembles, as part of the Orchestra's Model Sharing programme. The event is open,
particualrly but not exclusively, to youth orchestras from all Creative Europe participating countries.
Annual auditions in all 27 EU Member States will take place from October until December. EUYO’s online
learning programme, EUYO Frontrunners, launched last year, continues, as does the Orchestra’s ground-
breaking Café Bauhaus Awards programme, and the Stauffer Chamber Music Academy, all aiming to help equip
young musicians for the new pressures of life, such as navigating the online world, issues around diversity, equity
and inclusion, sustainability and climate change, and all the problems arising from Covid and the Ukraine
invasion. Further Ambassadorial projects have and/or will take place in 2023, in Italy, Austria and Mexico.
Funding
The war in Ukraine is affecting everyone in Europe with increased costs of living, which subsequently impacts
strongly on all types of art production and creativity. As a youth orchestra, we are finding it increasingly difficult
to raise funds through performance fees and individual patronage. Consequently, it is even more crucial than
before that we are able rely on the support of each of the EU Member States. We therefore propose that your
annual grant remain at least at the same level as last year at €6.500,00, going towards the travel,
accommodation, subsistence, teaching, performance, education and online expenses of your young orchestral
musicians’ representation in the EUYO, which through our online learning platform will now also include alumni.
We kindly request that the payment of your grant would reach us by 1 June, 2023 at the latest in order to help
us cover our costs, many of which, such as the major touring costs, are payable in advance of the performances.
On behalf of our Board of Directors and our young musicians, I would like to thank you profusely for your
continued support of the EUYO. Your assistance is greatly appreciated. Your contribution to the Orchestra, as
well as the invaluable support of the EU’s Creative Europe programme, makes all of this work possible as well
as symbolising Europe at its best. We hope that you will agree that in challenging times for Europe, it is all the
more important for the Orchestra to continue its work as Cultural Ambassador for the European Union.
With best wishes, sincerely,

2022 Activity Report
_____________________________________________________________________________________
DESCRIPTION
This report will include all the details of EUYOF activities in the year 2022. Specifically, it will describe:
the development, progress and achievement of the general and specific objectives of the work
programme; where the work programme (on the basis of the main activities) has been implemented; the
methodology followed to meet the general and specific objectives; the arrangements for
monitoring/supervision of the operation and how the risks involved in its implementation have been
mitigated.
PEACE IN EUROPE
Even more than in 2021, 2022 has been a year of challenges. On one hand, the pandemic is affecting
fewer Orchestra activities, although precautions are still necessary, with audiences now finally returning
to venues and concerts. On the other hand, the outbreak of the conflict in Ukraine is posing unexpected
new challenges, focusing once again on the need for resilience and adaptability.
As cultural ambassador for the EU, the Orchestra plays a key role in promoting peace in Europe. Our
young musicians from all 27 EU Member States working together embody the EU principle of Unity in
Diversity and offer tangible evidence that the best hope for harmony in Europe is through promoting
youth, culture and cooperation.
As part of this role, and at one of the most challenging moments for Europe in many decades, the
Orchestra launched the Peace in Europe project with a series of concerts throughout 2022 in countries
across Europe from the Baltic to the Mediterranean and the East of Europe to the North Sea, all dedicated
to the cause of peace in Europe and to highlight the plight of victims of violence.
As part of this project, the EUYO is currently assisting the Youth Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine (YsOU)
in a project to enable these players to continue their work by helping raise funds, by opening projects
such as the EUYO's new online learning programme for them, by assisting the YsOU management, and by
offering side by side performance possibilities between YsOU and the EUYO into the future.
AUDITIONS
Auditions for the 2023 Orchestra
Live auditions were held in October, November and December as usual, with planning for this starting
early in 2022 and carrying on throughout the year. In several countries where candidate numbers are
exceptionally high, or for other administrative reasons, there were two rounds of auditions. The panel of
the first round of auditions was provided by either the local organiser or EUYO. If the local organiser
provided the panel, this consisted of one, two or several jurors. If this was provided by EUYO, it was the
EUYO’s instrumental faculty.
For both live and online final-round auditions, candidates were heard by one experienced EUYO panel
member. To ensure a fair judgement, all auditions were recorded on video so that they can be judged by
a panel specific to the instrument and compared with all other audition candidates across Europe.
From December on the final audition panel began to moderate the auditions using written audition
reports as well as the video of the auditions. Then instrumental experts for each set of instruments
examined the potential candidate for that instrument. The announcement of 2023 Orchestra will be made
in late January 2023 after moderation process has been completed.

2022 Activity Report
_____________________________________________________________________________________
The 2022 auditions process was aided by the centralisation of all EUYO applications into one relational
database called Airtable. Previously, each of the 27-member states had a separate application form based
on their own application deadline and audition requirements, and each of these fed into a separate offline
spreadsheet. None of the National Partners could track their citizens’ progress in other countries, and the
data collected varied considerably from one country to another.
Now, there is a single application form serving all countries, which intelligently adjusts the data it requires
based on the preferred audition location of the applicant.
All applications then feed into a centralised database, which can then filter and group records by attributes
such as Application Status, Preferred Audition Location, Instrument, and dozens more. EUYO now has the
ability to generate links to this filtered data that we send to our National Partners, allowing them to track
– in real-time – the progress of not only applicants in their own country, but also applicants of their own
nationality applying in other countries. For example, the Italian National Partner can view all applications
in Italy, but also the progress of Italian nationals applying in any other EU member state.
Airtable also allows automatic generation of Audition Feedback Forms for each applicant, which the
audition panellist can then fill in directly. It provides them all the necessary repertoire information (both
the repertoire required for each instrument and the self-choice repertoire selected by the applicant), and
also automatically generates a filename for each video file recorded for each audition. This massively
reduces the risk of incorrect inputs, and saves considerable amounts of time when labelling upwards of
1,500 videos.
While the vast majority of National Partners are now happily using the EUYO Airtable, some countries
have retained their own application system (Austria, Netherlands, Hungary, Portugal). This unfortunately
means that our data cannot currently be 100% complete as these countries do not collect exactly the
same data we do, however work is already underway to align these systems for the coming year and
hopefully move these countries’ applications into the EUYO Airtable.

Auditions for the new 2023 Orchestra Leader
For 2022 there was an additional audition duty, which was to find and appoint a new orchestra leader
for the Orchestra’s 2023 season, since the leader of the previous years - up until the end of 2022 – left at
the end of 2022 in order to further her professional career. Becoming an EUYO leader is a life changing
opportunity for a rare violinist who can inspire the Orchestra through the highest levels of instrumental
playing, musicianship, and leadership. The desired profile needed to show a real balance between
technical ability, heart, head and gut, and a natural capacity to inspire and command with ease through
combining strengths in all these differing characteristics.
The process was conducted in the following stages: role articulation, role advertising, open transparent
application call, candidate shortlisting, and a final stage series of workshops and auditions conducted at
the Stauffer Academy in December (See the Stauffer Academy project p 24).

OTHER PROJECTS
EUYO Frontrunners
In Spring 2022 EUYO launched a new online learning programme, EUYO Frontrunners. Once it was
enough, as a young musician, to have a good teacher, practice hard and perform a good audition. Now
there are new pressures – navigating the online world, issues around diversity, equity and inclusion,
sustainability and climate change, and all the problems arising from Covid and the Ukraine invasion. To
help with these challenges, the EUYO has created Frontrunners as a programme of sustainable orchestral
musicianship, drawing inspiration from the UN’s 2030 Sustainability Development Goals and the EU’s
2021–27Creative Europe Agenda, as well as the Orchestra’s own priorities and goals.
A new faculty of specialist teachers under the guidance of global teaching expert and EUYO
Frontrunners Advisor Eric Booth presented sessions throughout the year across four areas: Perform,
Include, Share and Sustain.
PERFORM is about stage and performing skills in the broadest sense, such as how to best engage and
communicate with diverse audiences, and how to tackle issues like stage fright.
INCLUDE is about understanding the complex area of diversity, equity and inclusion, looking at how to
work with people from all kinds of backgrounds, understanding differences between cultures, and finding
ways to help advance social justice through your work.
SHARE is about marketing yourself and your work, including bringing your identity and values to the
fore to programmers and the media. Topics include how to present yourself, use different online
platforms, and hone your entrepreneurial skills to develop your own funded projects.
SUSTAIN is about both the sustainability of the performing musician, including caring for your body
and mind, and being able to sustain a long-term career, as well as looking at how musicians can make a
contribution to major global issues such as climate change.

Sessions took place via a dedicated new EUYO digital learning platform euyodigital.eu. All sessions
were free for the young musicians. Initially provided for EUYO members and alumni of the past 5 years,
from September 2022 sessions were also opened by invitation to selected guests from the EUYO’s partner
organisations who work with young European musicians and teachers. These include EUYO’s National
Partners in the 27 EU Member States, the Youth Symphony of Ukraine, the Western Balkans Youth
Orchestra, the Lower Austria Music Schools management and the music education network Sistema
Europe.
Spring Residencies and Tour 2022
In Spring 2022, the EUYO mounted, unusually, two spring residencies, juxtaposing the traditional
Ferrara residency in the Teatro Claudio Abbado with the first orchestral residency in Finland – Young
Europe comes to Finland - where the orchestra engaged the audience in formal and informal concerts,
side-by-side events with the Sibelius Academy and the Tempo Oulu Orchestra, a community day, a
conductor’s workshop, a debate with young musicians and dancers, and a late-night music club session.
The EUYO musicians performed with conductors Elim Chan and Iván Fischer, and soloists Nicolas Altstaedt
and Kreeta-Julia Heikkilä. Young Europe comes to Finland is intended as a pilot for future EU and also ex-
EU residencies.
Performances in Ferrara included a new Music Minus the Rules! concert, an informal setting with a
presenter, and started with a special concert on 25 March in memory of David Sassoli, President of the
EU Parliament and EUYO Honorary President, preceded by a tribute by Hon. Silvia Costa, which was
attended by Sassoli’s family and the Italian Minister of Education, Patrizio Bianchi.

Café Bauhaus
Inspired by European Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen’s New European Bauhaus launched in
2020 to help shape more beautiful, sustainable and inclusive forms of European living, EUYO launched
Café Bauhaus on Europe Day 2022. An annual open call to EUYO members and recent alumni awards seed
funding and free training to projects connecting music to modern day issues such as sustainability,
diversity, equity and inclusion.
The 2022 Award winning projects were:
Trobairitz - Histoires Naturelles
Trobairitz: Histoires Naturelles is a project that consists of four cross-art chamber music concerts in Paris
where the public has an important participation role. Performances are created in the form of story-
telling, based on music from different epochs and styles combined together with poetry and elements of
acting. Each concert takes place in a different part of the city and represents themes connected with our
modern, sustainable life: ecology awareness, cultural diversity, art and humanity. The artists are not only
performers but also cross-art creators, embodying the modern version of the wandering female early
Medieval troubadours called Trobairitz.
Trio Borea - Interilles
Trio Bórea will perform a concert series based on their show "Alte Liebe". Interilles is their first attempt
at creating an immersive multi-media performance, where chamber music, video projections, video-
mapping, live electronics and field recordings come together. The concept of these sessions is to bring
this new way of understanding classical music concerts to all corners of the Balearic Islands. Trio Bórea
believe that culture and tourism should go hand in hand to create more sustainable and attractive cultural
spaces. Therefore, they would like to inspire new generations to get involved in the cultural environment

of their surroundings. During Interilles the trio escapes from the traditional concert format, interacting
with the audience using the entire stage, and inviting the audience to participate actively in the
performance through the use of new technologies.
Thirteen North - Human Connection
Scotland-based string ensemble Thirteen North are excited to be developing a project in Glasgow that
explores the power of human connection. Combining music from Scotland’s heritage of folk music with
classical works also inspired by folk, while bringing the performances to life through a collaboration with
a Glasgow-based film artist, they will explore the importance of human connection across all
demographics of society. The project will be workshopped with youth participants at a local music hub,
performed at exciting contemporary arts venues, and shared with the most senior of Scotland’s
population at local residential homes; the aim is to draw an organic line of creative connection across a
portion of the Glaswegian population. Following two years of challenging isolation felt by many,
Thirteen North wants to demonstrate how music has the capacity to connect us across the ages, and
celebrate the importance of shared creative experiences.
Alpha Mission – ΔELOS
A live streamed concert, broadcast on the ARTE channel, marked the inauguration of ALPHA MISSION –
ΔELOS, an initiative that aims to raise awareness globally about the urgent need for the regeneration of
our planet through the combined strengths of mythology, art and space technology. It was broadcast on
the 30th anniversary of ARTE, an important European cultural channel and symbol of Franco-German
friendship. The concert formed part of the EUYO’s Peace in Europe project and marked the first time in
history in which a classical orchestra set foot on the island of Delos.
The concert won the award for the best-televised concert at the 59th Golden Prague International Festival,
an international event that presents the best music and dance televised programs in the world. Most
importantly, the concert was broadcast on big screens in the garden of the Megaron Concert Hall in
Athens, the Town Hall of Mikonos and the Ekatontapiliani Church of Paros in Greece; the Campo San
Lorenzo in Venice, Italy; the Orangerie de la Fondation Hardt in Geneva, Switzerland; the Falling Walls
conference in Berlin and finally in the European Parliament in Brussels, introduced by a speech of the
European Parliament President, Roberta Metsola, who is also Honorary President of the EUYO.
The ALPHA MISSION - ΔELOS concert is a co-production of the World Human Forum & ARTE in partnership
with the EUYO, Europa Nostra, the Hellenic Space Center, the National Research Center for Natural
Sciences “Demokritos", the Hellenic Foundation for Culture, Megaron - the Athens Concert Hall - and the
Ephorate of Antiquities of Cyclades.

Summer Residencies and Tour 2022
As part of the Summer Tour 2022, players coming from all 27 EU Member States worked and lived together
for an intense period of 40 days, during which they were coached by expert instrumental professors, and
performed with renowned conductors and soloists in great concert halls as well as in free events in
informal settings. Summer 2022 performances included the world première of Nexus by Hannah Kendall,
commissioned by the European Broadcasting Union. Two residencies, in particular, enabled the Summer
Tour 2022 performances to take life: the first one in Grafenegg, the summer home and principal venue
partner of the Orchestra, where the EUYO is Orchestra in Residence and Partner in Campus Grafenegg;
and the second one in Bolzano, where the City of Bolzano has hosted the Orchestra during its summer
tours since 1980 for the Bolzano Festival Bozen, a project created by EUYO founding music director Claudio
Abbado.
The EUYO concerts in Poland took place during an important cultural anniversary in the country, the Year
of Polish Romanticism, which marked the 200th anniversary of the publication of Adam Mickiewicz’s
Ballads and Romances. To celebrate this anniversary, the Adam Mickiewicz Institute carried out projects
around the world, showcasing contemporary interpretations of Polish Romanticism as well as its
contribution to world heritage. As part of the celebrations, the EUYO performed in both Lusławice and
Warsaw The Sorrowful Tale by Mieczysław Karłowicz, perhaps the last Polish romantic composer.
The Amsterdam Community Day was dedicated to reaching diverse groups of people visiting the city's
museums, offering a wide selection of musical genres, from the touching Sonata for Flute, Viola and Harp
