Programme Call
CULT-COOP-07-2017 (RIA Research and Innovation action)
Cultural heritage of European coastal and maritime regions
two-stages submission (1st stage: 02 February 2017, 2nd stage: 13 September 2017)
Title of Proposal
PHARART. European Lighthouses: Landmarks of Culture and Education
ABSTRACT
Historic Lighthouses (HLs) and their unique natural landscape are a significant part of tangible
Cultural Heritage, closely related to the history of navigation of Europe, from where the
overseas voyages of the great explorers started. HL(s) have been for centuries intimately
connected with myths of sailors and fishers lives. Nowadays, due to the telecommunication
achievements, the role of HL(s) has been depreciated.
Some of them have been abandoned and gradually destroyed by the aggressive marine
environment and others were improperly used without transmitting the “values” of their past
(tangible and intangible). Hence, a multilevel and coherent frame of activities should be
developed in close cooperation with Authorities, social sector, local communities, cultural
tourism stakeholders for the preservation of HL(s) and awareness of society and particularly of
young people.
During the previous EC-PHAROS project (2004-07), coordinated by AUTH (Greece), a holistic
methodology for the documentation, restoration and revitalization of HL(s) was developed and
applied successfully in a number of HL(s). Based on the experience and knowledge of the
problems associated with HL(s), the PHARART project aims at:
1. Unifying and establishing a European strategy and methodology concerning the preservation
of HL(s) as monuments and exploitation of their cultural values, by incorporating them in the
modern society. A number of tools will be developed based on dialogue and cooperation of
the aforementioned sectors such as:
- Protocol about the documentation of the “values”.
- Methodologies (materials and practices) of restoration/ rehabilitation.
- Atlas of common damages of HL(s)
- Successive and compatible with the monuments’ “values” perspectives of exploitation.
- Webinars and training lessons for making specialists (technicians) for restoring HL(s) and
maintaining them.
2. Development of freely accessible, comprehensive and attractive digital and interactive
educational material for citizens’ and young people’s entertainment and learning. It will
contain 3D visualization of famous LH(s), connection with museums, social or public
awareness to respect and embrace the LH(s) as their monuments. Foundations devoted to
navigation history will support these activities with their partnership.
3. Society awareness. Enrichment and management of the existing mobile exhibition material
on HL(s) with multi-lingual interpretations, organization of competitions of art creations, press
conferences, festivals.
4. Exploitation of HL(s) as poles of cultural tourism. Accession of HL(s) net in the route of cruise
ships in cooperation with HL(s) Authorities.
