SHIP EMISSIONS MONITORING
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) ship emission
monitoring service measures the amounts of sulphur dioxide (SOx)
that are emitted by individual vessels travelling into or in the European
Emission Control Areas located in the EU and also outside where ships
have to respect limitations with regard to the fuel sulphur content.
EMSA provides RPAS operations free of charge to EU member states,
Iceland and Norway, subject to budget availability and number of
requests. The sensor equipment enables users to detect and monitor
SOx, CO2 and NOx emissions. Readings related to SOx will be shared
for the benefit of all member states using the THETIS-EU reporting
system. It can also be used to track humans and vessels in distress at
sea or, more generally, vessels and their activities and operations.
KEY CHARACTERISTICS
The key characteristics of this particular RPAS service include:
high level of availability and easy to deploy
medium endurance
integration with THETIS-EU foreseen
SERVICE
The service is provided as follows:
based on mobile unit
comes under the command and control of the member state
