Subject: Save the Date - High-level event for World Cancer Day, 31 January 2024
Dear Ministers,
It is now almost three years since the Commission adopted Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan -
the EU’s most ambitious ever initiative against cancer and a key pillar of our European
Health Union. The strong support from all Member States for this Plan, and the pan-EU
commitment to turn aspiration into action, has been critical to its success so far.
The Cancer Plan has grown from an ambitious idea into a remarkable set of actions, across a
broad array of EU policy areas. Backed by an unprecedented EUR 4 billion in EU funding, it
is making a real difference in tackling cancer at every stage, from prevention to early
detection, from treatment to quality of life. The Cancer Plan mirrors our quest for a healthier,
more resilient and better prepared EU, to the benefit of citizens, patients and survivors,
researchers, healthcare workers and carers. Together, we must continue to ensure that the
Cancer Plan remains a top priority in our health policies, to the benefit of all our citizens.
I would therefore be honoured if you would join me for a high-level conference that I will
host for World Cancer Day 2024. The conference will bring together hundreds of
participants from the EU institutions, national governments, international organisations and
stakeholder groups, as well as key representatives of the cancer community. It will be a
celebration of the Cancer Plan’s role in revolutionising how we tackle cancer across the EU,
as well as a chance to reflect on its key achievements and the next steps.
The event will take place on 31 January 2024 (afternoon), in the European Commission’s
Charlemagne Building, Brussels.

I would be delighted if you would attend this important event and would ask that you save
the date in your calendar. A formal invitation and agenda will follow soon.
