Hello again mr Daukša,
Maritime Administration of the Republic of Estonia (EMA) has long experience in using icebuoys. During
past 10 years we have tested different buoy designs from Estonia, Finland, Ukraine, Sweden, France. We
use steel and plastic buoys. Depending on depth we use 1,5 ton up to 12 ton sinkers and also in shallow
waters 2-3 sinker combinations (for example 3x1,5 tons). We have tested ice lanterns from Sabik
(http://www.marine.sabik.com/images/pdf/datasheets/Datasheet_Marine_Lanterns_MPVLED.pdf) and from
EKTA ice lantern for extreme ice condtions (http://www.ekta.ee/html/e829.htm) and EKTA regular lantern
(http://www.ekta.ee/pdf/e8232.pdf). After testing we chose EKTA lantern because of vertical divergence is
so much better (Sabik MPV-LED 10 degrees, EKTA E8232 26 degrees). Bigger vertical divergence is very
important in bad weather and ice conditions. Also with EKTA monitoring system it’s very easy to
get/send/communicate/set data with buoy lantern. For example if you have low voltage, you can postpone
your buoy maintenance trip and save batteries by decreasing lantern candelas, you can set lantern work time
by sunrise/sunset schedule, all the info can go the mobile phone, you can get the temperature from buoys,
even get info of wave height, get info buoys angle, you can set that lanetern goes off when it’s under ice etc.
At open sea and with depth more than 12-15 meters we use steel buoy (see attached drawing –
P0809.00.0_1_D) and always with 12 ton sinker.
Between depths 4-15 metes we use plastic buoys (see attached drawing – Estonian buoy…) with 4 ton sinker
in ice conditions.
Depths up to 4-5 meters we use steel buoy (see attached drawing - 000 JP-2400 -07 - 000 Koostejoonis A1-
Model). We use 1,5 ton sinker if the buoy is seasonal, if the buoy is in medium ice conditions we use 3-4 ton
sinker and in heavy ice conditions we use up to 12 ton sinker (or combination 2-3 pcs of 3 ton sinkers).
We use primary batteries from local company www.renovaar.ee but I know that you have Tebata in Klaipeda,
so use Tebata products, but we have modified batteries a bit (please see attachment - R-18 2011 F-A4
landscape).
In Klaipeda Port we’d recommend to use SeaHow plastic buoy VPU500/1000 with EKTA E8232 lantern
with cupola (we buy cupolas from Swedem they cost about 60-70 euros a piece, I can give you information
if you need). We think you don’t have heavy ice and that’s why you don’t need extreme ice lanterns like
Sabik MPV or EKTA E829x. But we recommend to use lantern protector (see attachment - Jaakaitse_A).
You can order them from local company (cost ~max 100 euros a piece). SeaHow buoy VPU500/1000 must
be used with (x1,5 depth or x2 depth) chain. If you need buoys for narrow channel, you should use
prestressed buoys and in this case, we suggest that you contact directly SeaHow (mr Seppo Virtanen,

Director, MSc (Civ Eng), Buoy Products and Smart Monitoring Solutions, P.O. Box 111, 00181 Helsinki,
FINLAND, GSM +358 40 823 2122,
[email protected]).
By the way we’re right now with SeaHow developing prestressed plastic buoy for Estonian narrow sea
channels and to use them also in ice conditions.
If you have any more (specific) questions please contact me directly.
And you are most welcome to visit us in Tallinn. We can show all the buoys, lanterns, batteries, ships etc.
and discuss all the matters.
Best regards

Hello,
We are going to renew our park of floating atons. I am looking for contact who can share some experience on using
ice buoys. What is your preferences: steel or plastic? What ports are using? Reliable manufactures?
Thanks in advance.
Kind Regards,
Raimondas Daukša
